Is this post a joke? My one line response is more detailed than your command. Let's hope the eventual designer has better command of English than the poster

Original Request:

REAL ESTATE AGENT NEEDS WEBMASTER TO SET UP INTERFACE EXPRESS FOR MY CLIENTS....PLEASE KNOW HOW TO DO THIS AND HOW MUCH YOUR ASKING PER HOUR.....

And my thoughts...

Well firstly I haven't the foggiest idea what Interface Express Branding is. Do you? Could you explain it a little? Actually I'm being too polite, please explain it a lot because no professional is going to quote based on such vague requirements, especially if they don't understand what you mean.

While we're at it, how much you charge me for finding me dream home? I need a fixed commission quote. I'll tell you what i like and what I need after you agree to a set commission.

re: UI Designer for my site (Not anywhere on earth)

[original message at end]

This place never fails to amaze me. Your post is offensive and only a marginal improvement on the one where you expect someone to work for free with the possibility of shares in your 'idea', which I dutifully flagged.

Now to its replacement... you're asking for someone with a multitude of skills but write it in a way to suggest that someone could just 'knock this together' in 5 minutes or so. You need a UI designer plus a graphic designer (rarely the same) plus a copywriter. All 3 are highly skilled areas and almost never do you get someone with adequate skills in all areas, although there's many that think they have.

Unfortunately yours isn't the only post that really stoops the whole profession to the gutter. At this kind of rate you'll end up with a complete clown at best who'll do a terrible job because they won't know what they're doing. You might then be tempted to think that UI designers are all like this. I have a PhD in psychology and 20 years' experience. Posts like this sicken me as being recognized for the expert that I am is more and more difficult in Vancouver thanks to bait ads like this and the complete time wasters that you're going to attract. Believe me, for a couple hundred bucks you may as well do it yourself as you're probably way more skilled than anyone who would respond at this rate. Seriously!

I won't bother flagging your post as I think it's important for others to pass their comments too. At least you're now offering marginal compensation. Oh I just noticed you want examples of people's work. That's about as safe as credit card companies thinking that a card was secure by virtue of having a signature on the back panel.

Good luck though.

I need someone to design a user friendly & professional user interface for my site. I'm personally doing all the back end programming and just need some one for the front end. You would be required to make a page template and add some graphics as well as write up some content / text on different pages.

Please don't send me your resume, just send me a few examples of you work. For example, just 4 or 5 links would be fine.

The compensation is negotiable, but for now, I'm going to say $200.

Html/PHP/MySQL, Designer/Programmer (Vancouver)

Posted: 07 Oct 2009 10:44 AM PDT

We would like to migrate the development and management of our application with a more local person who is highly experienced in web design/database applications. This is not an application created, managed or operated by the faint of heart. We need a seriously talented html designer and programmer using php and mysql.

Our current resource is fairly unresponsive and provide very little in terms of ongoing service - which we fully anticipated. However, we did not anticipate such a quick sale of our application to a huge client in the US. We also believe many more clients will come aboard.

So here is what our immediate requirements are:
We will decide on one person/organization, which will sign a NDA and put in time to learn how our application was built. Then, if the candidate is confident enough, will set up a new mock Account to show they have the necessary knowledge and skill to manage and develop this application. Upon successful Account setup we will pay $400. This is just for your time.

Here is what our long term requirements are:
Upon successful Account setup, we will arrange with the applicant an exclusive contract to manage the application by setting up Accounts for every new client, perhaps 1 per month. Down the road further design and development will be required. In the immediate future this will not be a full-time roll but a contract position.

We are a successful locally based corporation that has been in business for 8 years.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please respond only with a brief cover letter (no CV yet), that sums up your experience for this roll. We thank all those that apply, but we can only contact those that present the ideal experience and follow our application procedures.

Web and CS4 Student Designer (Surrey/Delta)

    Posted: 03 Oct 2009 05:28 AM PDT

Our small company with over 30 employees based in Delta/Surrey is looking for quotes from students and others who can edit pictures, create logos, do Flash, change and make many new websites for our expanding company. We need you to create very proffessional printed material and dynamic web sites that brand our company, set it apart from our many competitors, and make businesses want to do work with us. We have a site we are happy with, but want to do more to get a leg up on our competition.

You will be working very closely with the Christian owner of the company and many times during evenings and weekends if your available? You will be going through ideas and concepts and eventually laying the details out with a cost breakdown of what you can deliver. We need a guy or gal that is a great communicator, patient, flexible, detail orientated and have a creative flare. Of course you will be really good at Illustrator, PhotoShop, Flash, Dreamweaver and other similar products!

This is a part time contract position paying many, many thousands, and should last many years with all the work needing to be done. WE CAN NOT PAY TOP DOLLAR. We are looking for a top student or someone very reasonable that wants to pick up some work on the side of their normal job. It is preferred if you are in the Surrey Delta area, but not mandatory.

    PHP/MySQL developer needed ASAP (Yaletown)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2009 02:48 PM PDT

We're a young and growing property rental/travel oriented company with a great web presence. We're currently seeking another developer to join our team! We have an experienced senior programmer who needs an assistant to take some of the simpler work off of his plate so he can focus more on big picture things. We've got a lot of different yet similar projects on the go, which require us to think about many different subjects throughout our days, so an ability to think on your feet is important. We have a casual office environment, and while we work hard, its certainly low stress and fun.

The ideal candidate should have experience with PHP, MySQL, AJAX, and html/CSS. It would be nice if you also had experience with basic Apache configuration, Smarty templates, cURL, command line Linux/BSD use. This is a full time position, in an office in Yaletown, Vancouver.

To apply for this position, please send us a resume, as well as a basic code sample showing off some of the stuff listed above. The code sample is essential for getting an interview, but does not need to be large scale. It also should not contain any sensitive data. We will respectfully not bother contacting people who cannot follow this request.

We're also very tired of people in different countries and cities writing us to tell us about how we need to outsource our development. Read the ad, we know what we want, your spam will not convince us otherwise.

Re: Joomla Template Creation (at home) (Vancouver)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2009 11:57 AM PDT

I see this a lot where others post low priced web design requests and jobs... this one says Critical to have a unique design developed so that it can be resold and resold (if I understand it correctly) is the same as these other requests for low priced work. I have been designing and working for Joomla for 4 years now and I can assure you that to design a unique original custom design for $200 to $500 is absolutely insane. A realistic price for a unique template of high quality will start at $2000 at least...mine starts at $2500. And you are also wanting the PSD files too? insane!

Anyone who is willing to do this for this low price and letting the other profit greatly from it is hurting the design industry and the more people see these low price jobs will think this is normal....Web designers will start at $45 per hour when working for an agency (at least) and full design projects start in the 1000s.

Lets get realistic here. I know people and businesses want the best lowest price possible but there is also the reality that what you ask for would put designers out of business and out of work with jobs. Designing quality websites is hard time consuming work and it requires a lot of skill to do this and if you want a real quality designer and you are a real and serious business wanting a website, you need to do your home work.
